A Unique Arts & Crafts Hotel
in the heart of an historic village
About The New Inn
The New Inn has been welcoming travellers to the picturesque, car-free village of Clovelly for hundreds of years. It once played host to Charles Dickens, who wrote of the cobbled streets and wooded cliffs in A Message to the Sea, and was no doubt frequented by Charles Kingsley when he lived just a few doors away. Today, owners Ian and Theresa are opening a new chapter in the inn’s long story. Currently undergoing a sympathetic restoration, this cosy hotel and pub is being thoughtfully reimagined - preserving its character, craftsmanship, and enduring charm for generations to come.
In 1914, the New Inn relocated across the street and village matriarch Christine Hamlyn seized the opportunity to embrace the Arts and Crafts movement of the day. A century later, Ian and Theresa have drawn upon those same inspirations to furnish their bedrooms and public rooms - think handcrafted wooden details, William Morris wallpaper, richly patterned textiles, and a sprinkling of quirky antique finds.
